What was the favourite Clio of all time?

Readers of the e-Newsletter have voted Renaultsport's Clio V6 225 the best-ever hot Clio.

The car, which created a storm in the motoring press, got 28% of the vote and won exceptional praise from our forum members, who put it in front of the classic Clio phase 1 16V Williams mk1/2/3 and even the awesome Trophy which was beaten into third place.

The V6 has always attracted high praise with EVO magazine calling it the most "striking, exotically configured, involving and characterful car" in its price range. "I think the V6 is a great choice," said Clio Brand Manager Jeremy Townsend. "The best bit is the sound of that 3-litre engine right behind you. It's a pure race-bred guttural growl which develops into a wailing roar past 7,000rpm. I love it."

Comments submitted to the poll were equally enthusiastic. "I've had a 172 and 182 but it has to be Clio V6 255," wrote Simon Blakeburn. "I love mine. It's the combination of the speed, noise when driving and the attention that it gets - and it gets loads of that!"

Matt Leach added: "The Clio V6 255hp model gave the Clio a whole new attitude with that growling face, those flared wheel arches, the almighty 3.0 litre engine sat inches from your head. It was a Clio driver's dream to own one! What other manufacturer can take a small hatchback and turn it into a beast like that?"

"Simply the best," said Steve Newell. "Nothing else to add!"

Looking at the car, it is easy to see why it attracts such admiration with its outrageous body shell, huge flared wheel arches and 18" alloy wheels. "I've never driven one of the Clio Renaultsport V6s," wrote Michael Anderson. "Just to look at is enough to show any one that this car is up at the top."

David Fairweather added: "I just love the car - the raw styling that the R32 and S3 just can't compete with. It's a real head turner. I get really excited on those rare occasions when you get to see one on the road and as soon as insurance and funds allow there will be one in my garage forever, until then I can keep dreaming and pray they don't get written off!"
