Bushell fends of Whorton-Eales for race one win at Oulton Park as Coates celebrates first podium

Mike Bushell took victory in Saturday’s Renault UK Clio Cup round at Oulton Park but only after a hard-fought tussle with eventual runner-up Ant Whorton-Eales. Behind, Max Coates celebrated his first podium result in the championship with a third place finish.

JamSport’s Whorton-Eales led the early stages thanks to a meteoric start that took him from fourth on the grid into the lead by the first corner. Pyro’s Bushell, who started from pole position, was right behind, however, and on lap three moved past at the Hislops chicane.

The pair then exchanged the lead twice more before 2014 Champion Bushell came out on top and drew clear for his first victory of the season.

He also set the race’s fastest lap for two bonus points and, going into tomorrow’s second race at Oulton, has moved past Paul Rivett into the championship lead.

WDE Motorsport’s Rivett finished a recovering seventh after running off the track in a tangle with BMR Pyro’s Senna Proctor as they disputed third.

That moment opened the way for Ciceley’s Coates to take third right behind Whorton-Eales who crossed the line with damage to the rear of his car.

Proctor took fourth ahead of Rivett’s team-mate Charles Ladell who held the fastest lap for much of the race and Cooksport’s Lee Pattison, up to sixth from tenth on the grid for vital points in his title challenge.

Following Rivett and completing the top ten were Team Ecomotive with Finesse’s Daniel Rowbottom, Pyro’s Josh Price and JamSport’s Luke Kidsley.

Overnight, therefore, Bushell leads the standings on 174 points with Rivett on 162, Whorton-Eales 156 and Pattison 152.

Finesse's Paul Streather still holds fifth but a 12th-place finish today means he has fallen away from the top four and suddenly finds himself under threat from Coates in sixth, these two on 129 and 126 points respectively.
