Bushell & Whorton-Eales clear of the pack in Renault UK Clio Cup FP2 at Brands Hatch

Returning 2014 Champion Mike Bushell set the fastest time of the day to top the Renault UK Clio Cup’s second free practice session at his home circuit of Brands Hatch this afternoon.

Team Pyro’s Bushell, from nearby Tunbridge Wells, went on a blistering run of five super-fast laps towards the end of the session to set a best time of 52.354s around Brands’s tight 1.2-mile Indy circuit.

Only JamSport Racing’s Ant Whorton-Eales seemed capable of going with him and, with a flurry of fast laps himself, was just 0.053s adrift with a best of 52.407s.

Bushell said: “I’m surprised that the times kept getting quicker over so many laps – we need to look at why but it’s a good sign if we’ve got a set-up that will do that. It also restores my faith in me being P1 again.”

As in this morning's first session, however, times remained incredibly tight with less than a second covering first to 21st position.

Pyro pair Josh Price and David Dickenson were next up in the session, albeit more than a quarter of a second behind Bushell and ‘AWE’ – their efforts good enough for fourth and fifth overall when times from the day’s two sessions were combined.

Indeed, WDE Motorsport’s Paul Rivett chose to sit out much of session two and relied on his morning time of 52.530s to be third overall. He was one of only three drivers out of 23 on track who failed to improve on their time from the morning.

Finesse Motorsport’s Paul Streather, Ciceley Motorsport’s Ollie Pidgley and Team Ecomotive’s Daniel Rowbottom filled places sixth to eighth. PP Motorsport’s Anton Spires was 12th while Lee Pattison and Sam Watkins were the best-placed drivers for Team Cooksport and 20Ten Racing in 13th and 16th.
