Current drivers Max Coates, Dan Zelos and Ollie Pidgley will be the first to receive the test – in Ciceley’s race-winning BTCC Mercedes – when the current season has finished.

Team Principal Adam Morgan, also Ciceley’s star BTCC race driver, commented: “Having seen the immediate impact the top drivers coming from the UK Clio Cup have had in British Touring Cars – and I know; I’m up against them! – we feel each of our drivers after a season in the UK Clio Cup will be ready for a run in the tourer.

“We put great pride into nurturing our young drivers and really believe this adds significant value to what we can offer those joining our team in future.

“Certainly everything about the UK Clio Cup prepares the driver for touring cars as well as careers in other major categories – the technologies, the driving technique, the race craft and pressures are all similar to those found in the BTCC.

“We are only mid-way through our first season in the UK Clio Cup but have been immediately struck by the excellent reliability and performance of the car and also the very professional manner in which the championship is structured, managed and promoted.”

Ciceley’s announcement adds yet further credibility to the UK Clio Cup’s very strong ties with the BTCC. In addition to Ciceley’s presence:

  • Factory touring car concern BMR already backs Senna Proctor, Mike Bushell and Josh Price in the UK Clio Cup through its young driver scheme
  • UK Clio Cup outfit Team Cooksport is run by factory BTCC driver Josh Cook
  • The UK Clio Cup shares the same tyre partner as the BTCC, Dunlop, and uses a similar tyre compound to that on the touring car grid
  • 2016’s UK Clio Cup Champion will also receive a test in a BTCC car courtesy of Dunlop

Furthermore it is former UK Clio Cup drivers that make up the majority of the current top names in the BTCC such as points leader Sam Tordoff, past champion Andrew Jordan, emerging stars Cook, Ashley Sutton and Daniel Lloyd and proven race-winners Mat Jackson and Jack Goff. Both Plato and Colin Turkington also have Renault Sport on their racing CVs.
