Leading touring car team boss Scott endorses Clio Cup for young racers

Leading British Touring Car Championship team boss Warren Scott believes the Renault UK Clio Cup is the best category for young drivers to learn their race craft if they want a successful career in the BTCC.

Scott’s BMR squad confirmed yesterday it will expand its current set-up at BTCC events to enter a car in the Clio Cup for rising British star Ashley Sutton. It is all part of bringing on young drivers in preparation for the BTCC.

Two of BMR’s drivers in 2014’s BTCC – Aron Smith and Jack Goff (Champion in 2012) – had moved directly into touring cars from the Clio Cup. Smith won two races en route to ninth in the standings. In fact nine of 2014’s 30 BTCC races were won by drivers with full Clio Cup campaigns behind them…

Scott commented: “I’m in this for the long run and want to make Team BMR a real success in the BTCC. The Clio Cup is the place to train the young drivers and bring them through. It’s a real breeding ground for touring cars, as we’ve seen with Jack (Goff) and Aron (Smith) and gives drivers the skills they need.

“Racing isn’t just about driving the car – there’s so much more to it. Our current BTCC drivers have got a lot of experience to share, so it’ll be a brilliant opportunity for Ashley (Sutton) and any other drivers we might run in Clios to benefit from that as part of Team BMR.”

The opening two races of this year’s 18-race Renault UK Clio Cup will take place at the world famous Brands Hatch circuit in Kent on the weekend of Sat 4th/Sun 5th April. All the races will take place during British Touring Car events meaning huge trackside crowds and live television coverage on ITV4.
