Rivett out to claw back lost ground in Snetterton rounds in push for fourth title

Paul Rivett says he sees no reason why he still can’t reel in runaway points leaders Ant Whorton-Eales and Mike Bushell and win a fourth Renault UK Clio Cup title in 2016 as the championship prepares to resume its season at Snetterton (Sat 30/Sun 31 July).

Rivett will arrive at the Norfolk circuit trailing leader Whorton-Eales by 51 points but, with eight races still to go and 32 points per win, he argues there is time yet to claw back lost ground.

He can also count himself unfortunate not to be considerably closer to the top after an unheard of electrical fault on his WDE-prepared machine cost him an almost certain second win at Croft.

Also, taking the championship’s two-dropped-scores rule into account, Rivett does close up on the two leaders – he currently has 15 points to discard compared to the 32 of Whorton-Eales and 38 of Bushell.

“The gap now is not reflective of where we are in terms of pace and performance,” said Rivett. “We’ve just had four bad races out of the last five.

“Take Croft for example – we definitely found something and were by far the fastest car out there in race trim and yet 32 points turned to just six with the sensor problem.

“It’s knocked us back a bit so the intention is to come out fighting at Snetterton and begin the fightback immediately. I’m really motivated for this.”

In his 15 years in the UK Clio Cup, Rivett has seen the second half of the season result in huge points swings with drivers coming back from the seemingly impossible to clinch the title – Bushell-Cook in 2014 and Sutton-Hand in 2015 are two prime examples!

The three-time Champion added: “It’s strange what can happen when people feel the pressure of the title race. Not so long ago we were right up there at the top of the points – who’s to say in the next few events it won’t swing back our way and we’ll be back to the top?

“I’ve shown I can handle that pressure and believe I’m driving just as well as ever and of course have a lot of experience which can be invaluable in situations like this.

“I also believe we have the strongest package and car out there and see absolutely no reason why we can’t come back and win the title.”
