On a drying track, times started to tumble and Smith set his best lap of 52.838 seconds just as the session was brought to a premature end when Freddie Hunt’s Team BKR car suffered front-end damage in a crash at Clearways.
SV Racing’s Ant Whorton-Eales was next up (52.994s) followed by JamSport’s impressive Dan Holland (53.136s). 20Ten Racing’s Jordan Stilp, fastest for most of the session (53.173s) and WDE Motorsport’s Paul Rivett (53.177s) completed the top five.
A further four drivers – Jack Mitchell (SVR), Ashley Sutton Team BMR Restart with Pyro), Charles Ladell (Team Cooksport) and Ash Hand (Pyro) – were also within a second of the pace when the chequered flag flew.
Test session two is scheduled to run from 3.20pm-4.05pm.
