TITLE IS “IN THE LAP OF THE GODS” SAYS SUTTON AHEAD OF BIG BRANDS HATCH FINALE

Ashley Sutton believes Team Pyro team-mate Ash Hand is feeling the pressure as they both prepare for the Renault UK Clio Cup’s title-deciding final two rounds at Brands Hatch this weekend (Sat 10/Sun 11 Oct).

Going into the season finale Sutton, in his distinctive black BMR Restart-backed car, has emerged as championship leader Hand’s closest challenger when the all-important ‘two-dropped-scores’ rule is applied.

Maximum Motorsport’s Ant Whorton-Eales, in third, also has a realistic chance while WDE Motorsport’s Paul Rivett is just about still in it as well, albeit in a very distant fourth.

Sutton commented: “Ash is the prey and Whorton-Eales and I are the hunters. I think Ash is rattled and he knows Ant, Paul and I know that but he’s trying not to show it.

“I’ve got good momentum, but I don’t want to sound too confident or big-headed, maybe like some… It can change very quickly. Ash lost 16 points in one event at Silverstone.”

Sutton believes he will be bang on the pace around the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit this weekend after stunning there with his speed in single-seaters 12 months ago.

“It is a strong track for me and ideally I can win both races,” he added. “But even if I do that then it is still totally in the lap of the gods as to what happens behind me. I have a feeling Rivett and Ant are going to be very strong there and I need those two in there fighting with Ash and me to mix it up a bit.

“I’m not really feeling nervous. I’ve gone into title showdowns before in karting when there have been five who could have won it. I know what comes with it, I’ve done my homework and know what needs to happen.”
