Bushell: Whorton-Eales a better racer but I’m a better qualifier

Mike Bushell believes his and arch title rival Ant Whorton-Eales’s differing strengths as racers and qualifiers will lead to an intense second half to the Renault UK Clio Cup season between them.

Heading into Snetterton’s two races this weekend (Sat 30/Sun 31 July) Bushell finds himself in a similar position to that in 2014 when he won the crown – behind on points with just the one win and playing catch-up.

Back then, however, he was 34 points off the lead – more than a race win. Now he is just three adrift of the top spot.

“There are similarities in terms of results but at the same time it’s also a totally different scenario!” said Bushell.

“Pace-wise Ant was good enough for the front row of the grid for the first few events and me not so much, but now it’s gone the other way. I feel I’m better at qualifying than him and maybe he’s the better racer which is why we are so close at this stage.

“Oulton Park race two he got past me and won; in Croft race two I made an error leading out of the first bend and ended up second, not first.

“That’s eight points lost and potentially three wins instead of just the one, but I’m not going to worry about things I can’t change – with them I’d be five in front, not three behind but those sorts of gaps are nothing in Clio racing either way.”

Bushell is confident he will have strong pace at Snetterton and not just because of his five pole positions in the last six rounds.

“I had a double pole the last time the championship raced there two years ago,” he added. “On saying that I then stalled on the line!

“I’ve been studying my races from the first half of this season and it will be a case of ironing out small mistakes which I feel I’ve made.

“Ultimately it’s all about keeping doing what I’m doing – go as fast as possible and qualify at the front as that is your best chance to stay in front. Even if I qualify on pole and lose two places in the races I know I’m still on for good points.”
