Renault UK Clio Cup race winner James Colburn (Worthing) and fellow front-runner Jake Giddings (Wisbech) will be flying the flag for the British championship at Motorland Aragon in Spain this coming weekend, 2nd/3rd November, during the one-off, winner-takes-all, Dunlop Clio Cup Final.
Pitched against some of the best Clio Cup drivers from the various national championships across Europe, Colburn and Giddings will each be battling it out for a truly sensational prize – the use of a brand new, Dunlop-branded, fourth generation 220hp turbo-powered Clio Cup race car for 2014.
Invited to take part in the Dunlop Clio Cup Final alongside competitors from Spain, France, Italy, The Netherlands and Sweden, as well as drivers from Clio Cup Bohemia which covers Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria, the two British racers are setting their sights high.
Colburn and Giddings, who will be run at Motorland Aragon by their respective family-run teams Westbourne Motorsport and Finesse Motorsport, will both be making their debuts at the Alcaniz track but are still confident of challenging at the sharp end during next weekend’s two races.
Finishing this year’s Renault UK Clio Cup season fourth overall in the main championship standings, just four points shy of the top three with two race victories and two other podiums, Colburn also ended the campaign as Vice-Champion of the Graduate Cup class.
“I’ve never seen the circuit, never been to the circuit, and I’m sure there will be a lot of Spanish drivers taking part who will have an advantage with track knowledge”, he said, “Hopefully me and Jake [Giddings] can go out there, though, and prove the Renault UK Clio Cup is the best of the national Clio Cup championships.
“Finishing fourth in the UK this year was good, it was nice to get back on the top step of the podium on the final weekend of the season and be back on the pace. We [Westbourne] showed we’re one of the best teams in the UK and hopefully we can be competitive against the others from Europe.”
Giddings was 10th overall in the main championship in his second season in the Renault UK Clio Cup, with a best result of fourth place on two occasions. In the Graduate Cup, the Finesse Motorsport driver ended the year in the top six.
“I’d never really heard of the place [Motorland Aragon] before to be honest so I’ve researched it on You Tube and looked at some circuit maps”, said Giddings, “It’s great to be flying the flag for England along with James [Colburn] and I’m really looking forward to it.
“The aim, obviously, is to try and win the new car. It’s a fantastic prize, we want to be in the new Clio in the UK next year so if we can win a car for the new season it’ll go a long way to helping us secure the budget to race Clios again.”
With the third generation racing Clio set to be replaced in all of the national championships in 2014, the Dunlop Clio Cup Final will be the last major one-make event in Europe for the hugely successful car since it was first launched in 2006.
“Winning a car for a season is a great prize”, said Dunlop Motorsport Europe General Manager Jean-Felix Bazelin, “The winner will have faced stiff competition simply to qualify for the Aragon event as one of the top drivers from their region, so we can be sure that the overall winner will definitely be one of the best production car drivers in Europe.”
Renault UK Clio Cup Champion Josh Files (Norwich) will also be in action at Motorland Aragon as he bids to put the icing on the cake of a remarkable year by winning the Eurocup Clio title. Heading into the final two races of its season, which will run as part of the Dunlop Clio Cup Final weekend, Files has an 11 point lead at the top of the Eurocup standings after a memorable double win last time out.
