Cook full of praise for protégé Collingbourne

2014 Renault UK Clio Cup runner-up Josh Cook has heaped praise on his young protégé Rory Collingbourne after the 17-year-old dazzled in testing on his first visit to the fearsome Thruxton circuit.

Collingbourne, from Newport in South Wales, will become one of the youngest racers in Renault UK Clio Cup history this year but in signing for Cook’s own new Cooksport squad he surely has one of the best teachers around.

Cook commented: “This was one of the most positive tests I’ve ever had with a driver. It was his first time at the track but he picked it up quickly, learnt a lot, listened well and produced good pace and very impressive data.”

Collingbourne himself said the experience of being on track with some of the stars of the British Touring Car Championship was a real eye-opener.

He said: “It was quite scary having Jason Plato and Colin Turkington alongside me and lunging me – they were going for it straight away whereas I had to spend the first laps learning the circuit. At the same time it was awesome and made me feel pretty special…

“One thing I did find was it’s a bit different driving Thruxton for real compared to practicing around there on the rFactor simulator!

“But I got comfortable with it thanks to Josh and running his set-ups from last year. Church is an excellent corner and after a while even in the wet I was almost able to hold it flat out all the way through. To say it was my first time around Thruxton and only my second time in the car it was a very good day’s testing.”
