The Wisbech team will be three-strong this weekend with former British GT4 champion Jake Giddings making a one-off outing in its third car.
The reason for Giddings’ inclusion is simple – to help give Streather and Rowbottom an all-important ‘tow’ around a circuit where, thanks to its long flat-out blasts, the slipstream effect can have a major bearing on results.
Indeed team-mates ‘towing’ one another during qualifying at Thruxton is commonplace in any category. However in the UK Clio Cup a good qualifying performance is doubly important as results from the session determine the starting grid order for both races.
Brands Hatch winner Streather goes into the weekend second in the outright drivers’ standings, 13 points adrift of leader, WDE Motorsport’s Paul Rivett, but with a maximum of 68 up for grabs from the two races – this weekend being held on the Sunday.
Streather commented: “It’s qualifying where we need to get it right – the tow is worth a huge amount so I’m happy I’ve got Dan and Jake to work with and hopefully we can help each other get a good grid position.”
He added: “I’ll certainly be trying my hardest at Thruxton. I’ve only raced once there before and a lot of the others have a huge amount of experience there, but I’m sure we’ll be able to race well.”
And said Rowbottom: “I’m going all out to try and get two podiums this weekend. I’m not here to do anything other than try and win – that’s my whole mindset for Thruxton.
“But the only way to challenge like that is to do well in qualifying. It won’t necessarily be the fastest driver who gets pole; it’ll be the one who gets the best tow.”
Giddings, a former front-runner in the UK Clio Cup, has made no bones about why he is being parachuted in by Finesse at Thruxton.
“It’s going to be great racing in the UK Clio Cup again”, he said. “The whole point of me being out there is to help Paul and Dan.
“Hopefully we’ll be able to work well together in qualifying and get all three Finesse cars up on the first few rows. I’m looking forward to it; it’s always good racing at Thruxton.”
