ITV duo John Neill & Glew all revved up for action aplenty in new Renault UK Clio Cup season

ITV pair Richard John Neill and Phil Glew believe this year’s Renault UK Clio Cup will be among the most exciting they have commentated on after seeing the way the championship has evolved over the past 12 months.

Both will be back behind the microphone for the UK Clio Cup during ITV4’s live coverage of events starting this Sunday (3 April) as part of the channel’s eight-hour (10.15am-6.15pm) British Touring Car programme from Brands Hatch.

In addition to being shown live as part of Sunday’s BTCC coverage, highlights of the UK Clio Cup action from Brands Hatch will also then follow on the ITV network’s Motorsport UK show (aired on ITV1 and ITV4).

Looking ahead to the new season, John Neill enthused: "Commentating on the UK Clio Cup is a bit special – just look at the roll of honour and also the way that it's the place to be for those drivers who are serious about making it into touring cars.

“The 2016 grid is already an intriguing one. The thing that stands out for me so far is the return of former champion Mike Bushell. He could have gone and raced anywhere else but instead wanted to come back into the UK Clio Cup fold and pitch himself against a new crop of drivers.

“At the other end of the experience scale you've got young Senna Proctor who drove a terrific campaign last year to be the joint top points scorer in the Ginetta Juniors after barely a couple of seasons of car racing. And there's so much other talent in between those two.

“It’s another extremely strong Renault line up and I would say that confidence in the UK Clio Cup is sky high. I think we'll see some new race victors challenging those who already have winning ways in the formula. I can't wait to join Phil Glew and call the action again.”

Glew, the 2009 UK Clio Cup Champion, commented: “I actually get excited when Sunday comes and I know I'll be commentating on a UK Clio cup race. The action especially last year was incredible – I genuinely can't remember the last UK Clio Cup race I commentated on where I had to think of something to say to fill the gaps!

“I do believe 2016 will be as good, if not better. This year is already shaping up to be an exciting year with the likes of Ginetta Junior drivers graduating into the championship, drivers staying on for their second, third or even eighth season and a certain ex-champion stepping back from the BTCC to compete once again, which alone shows just how appealing the UK Clio Cup really is.

“Even though all the BTCC’s supporting championships are organised and run at a very high standard, Renault really do make our lives a lot easier with all the updated notes and info they provide us. I can't wait for the season to start and to see the ex-champs going head to head along with the fresh new youngsters getting stuck in to mix it up a bit.”
