Plant, Vanquish back on UK Clio Cup grid for Snetterton rounds

Paul Plant has announced he will return to Renault UK Clio Cup action in Snetterton’s forthcoming rounds (Sat 30/Sun 31 July) and says he’s hoping for a ‘hassle-free’ event.

As in the early part of the season Plant will appear under the Vanquish Motorsport with WDE banner.

The highlight so far for the Alfa Romeo champion has been a fourth fastest in qualifying at Thruxton although there has only been the one top-ten finish – on his and Vanquish’s debut at Brands Hatch.

But said the 32-year-old: “I really want to change that when I come back at Snetterton – I want a good, solid, hassle-free, reliable weekend instead of it being just snippets of what I can do.

“I’ve been aiming for top-tens every time and if I can do that after two meetings away then I’d be happy.”

Plant openly acknowledges that the UK Clio Cup’s level of competition – it is the ultimate feeder category for the Dunlop British Touring Car grid – has astonished him.

He added: “It is amazingly competitive. I’ve recently looked back over my results the last two years – everything I’ve raced in I’ve always been a top-six runner. In this I can be P6 but on the next lap down to P12.

“The competitive nature of it is quite unbelievable and people who have followed me are astonished that you can be just four tenths off pole and still be outside the top 12.

“Certainly there’s a real art to getting the best out of the tyres and using the ‘tow’ of someone’s slipstream in qualifying – the experienced drivers really know how to it.

“I didn’t necessarily need it in qualifying at Thruxton – I’m more of a ballsy driver than technical – but it is something I’d like to work at starting at Snetterton where it will come into play.”
