Renault UK Clio Cup race winner Devon Modell will return to the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship-supporting category for a title bid this year after today, Monday, 3rd March, signing for a second season with SV Racing.
Completing the front-running squad’s four car line-up, Maidstone 23-year-old Modell joins the already confirmed KX Akademy-backed trio Alex Morgan (Reading), Ant Whorton-Eales (Lichfield) and Ash Hand (Nuneaton).
Having purchased his own fourth generation turbo-powered Clio Cup race car, Modell is plotting a major push for the championship in only his second year of action since returning to racing from a four year sabbatical after karting – during which he studied for a degree at Lancaster University.
Ending his maiden season in the Renault UK Clio Cup in 12th position overall, with a best result of fourth place, the 2005 Stars of Tomorrow Rotax Mini Max Champion went on to claim his first race win at Rockingham during the end-of-year Autumn Cup last November.
With a desire to ultimately pursue a career in sportscar racing, Modell contested his first major endurance race in January – the Dubai 24 Hours – where he finished a highly creditable second in class with the Motorsport Services team.
“I’m optimistic going into this season”, commented Modell, who will be backed in his sophomore season by Maidstone’s Gallery Nightclub, “I won a race in the Autumn Cup and before that we were getting nearer and nearer the front in the main championship as the season went on. Without a car failure at Brands [the final weekend of the 2013 season], we would have had a podium there.
“It’s great to be back with the SV Racing guys again, Danny [Buxton – team principal] is a good guy to have around you and the atmosphere is a lot of fun. We’ll probably be out testing the new car very soon, we had planned to do the recent Thruxton test but with how bad the weather was there I’m glad we didn’t do it. The aim this year is to fight for regular wins and, hopefully, the title.”
As well as focused on mounting a concerted challenge for the 2014 Renault UK Clio Cup title, Modell is also targeting a potential campaign in the Eurocup Clio series if the required funds can be raised to dovetail both programmes.
Looking ahead to the new season, SV Racing team boss Danny Buxton said: “At the back end of last year Devon really was threatening the top guys in the championship, then he won his first race in the Autumn Cup which was great. If he can keep his consistency, he’ll be a real contender this year.
“He is one of the most intelligent drivers to work with, he’s very switched on knows what the car is doing and what it needs – that intelligence is probably his biggest asset. Signing Devon completes my quartet for this season in the Renault UK Clio Cup, we’ve got four very good challengers.”
Modell’s ‘home’ track, Brands Hatch Indy Circuit, will host the opening two rounds of the Renault UK Clio Cup season on 29th/30th March. Before then, the championship’s annual Media Day and officially timed test will take place at Rockingham in Northamptonshire on Wednesday, 19th March.
Renault UK Clio Cup is supported by ELF, Performance Friction, WP Racing and official tyre supplier Dunlop.
