Rivett, the three-time Champion, set a best time of 52.530 seconds around Brands’s tight 1.2-mile Indy circuit to just pip returning 2014 title-winner Mike Bushell (52.601s) and Josh Price (52.785s) in their Team Pyro cars.
Paul Streather, who shocked on his debut in Brands’ final rounds last year, was fourth fastest for Finesse Motorsport. Ant Whorton-Eales, winner here 12 months ago, was fifth in his JamSport Racing car ahead of Team Ecomotive’s impressive Daniel Rowbottom, the fastest of the new names on this year’s grid.
Rivett said: “Everyone inside the top five we’re sure ran new tyres and I was held up by another car on my fastest lap going into Druids Bend. We’ve started as we mean to go on but we know everyone will go fastest in this afternoon’s second session.”
Notably less than a second covered the fastest 17 drivers out of the 23 on track.
Lee Pattison, eighth, was the highest-placed Team Cooksport drivers as another newcomer, Paul Plant, dazzled in his Vanquish-WDE car in ninth. Fellow debutant Ollie Pidgley was tenth, the fastest of the three Ciceley Motorsport drivers as Sam Watkins led the way for 20Ten Racing in 16.
