Stilp content with Thruxton, Silverstone tests

Renault UK Clio Cup title protagonist Jordan Stilp believes he and his 20Ten Racing team can take heart from their form in testing at Thruxton last week “even if we weren’t the fastest” around their bogey circuit from 2014.

Northamptonshire’s Stilp ended 2014 fighting for the drivers’ crown – winning three races in the season’s second half alone – but earlier in the year at Thruxton he had struggled for pace.

He said: “Thruxton was our Achilles Heel last year so it wasn’t a shock that were weren’t massively quick at last week’s test, but I’m not too bothered. It was quite damp soon into the day and on slicks it would have been very easy to have a big accident. Instead we tried a few different things on the car and that was important. We still got quite a bit out of it.”

After Thruxton Stilp and 20Ten moved north to his home circuit of Silverstone for testing around the Northamptonshire venue’s National circuit which will host the Clio Cup’s two penultimate rounds in September. The Clio Cup hasn’t raced at Silverstone since 2012 when current British Touring Car racer Jack Goff sealed the title.

Stilp, from nearby Potterspury, added: “I’ve not raced there before because I came to Clios after 2012 so it was all about trying new lines in both wet and dry conditions and what we tried seemed to work.

“I think our pace was quite quick and we came away feeling good about it all. We’ve got tests at Oulton Park and Brands Hatch lined up in the next fortnight so we need to keep the momentum going.”
