Ant Whorton-Eales showed he’s not giving up on this year’s Renault UK Clio Cup title without a major fight as he set the fastest lap of the day in testing at Rockingham to pip the man who has recently taken away his championship lead, Ash Hand.

This afternoon’s second free practice period was more like a 30-minute qualifying session with a furious pace being set at the top of the times as the leading positions changed on numerous occasions.

After his Maximum Motorsport team had cured a problem on his car from this morning’s first practice session, Whorton-Eales set a blistering time of 1m29.602s to bump Team Pyro’s Hand (1m29.644s) off the top spot by just 0.042s.

Third was WDE Motorsport’s Paul Rivett and fourth Hand’s BMR Restart-backed team-mate Ashley Sutton meaning the four main title contenders filled the top four places with just 0.284s covering them. All were also under British Touring Car star Jack Goff’s Clio Cup qualifying record timewhich he set on the way to the crown in 2012.

WDE’s Charlie Ladell and Rory Green shadowed team leader Rivett on track for part of the session and wound up a strong fifth and eighth fastest overall respectively. They were split by JamSport Racing pair Luke Kidsley and Tom Grundy, sixth and seventh. Another pair of team-mates, Cooksport’s Rory Collingbourne and George Jackson completed the top ten.
