General off topic/rant away thread explanation
|
Hi folks Decided to start a thread for when posts go off topic but are still great discussions. This way you can carry on discussing a particular topic without it taking the thread totally off it's original aim. Please don't be offended if your post gets moved into here, if anything if someone does move it into here it's because it Is seen as a very good or interesting point but has nothing to do with what the thread is about. I'm particularly thinking in recent times about (all the) M135i rants, Jackal and his awesome Golf R purchase in a 200T thread etc. To be clear, if things get brought up in relation to the thread, so discussing the new Golf R v a 275 Trophy then it wouldn't be moved Edited by moderator 17 July 2014 10:22:04(UTC)

Still too much money though for what is effectively a school run hatchback. I would not have considered buying it in a million years but the GF has had a rough time of it recently so I had better do the right thing for once I'll be quite surprised if you don't quite like it. The bang-crackle on upshifts is laughable (in a good way), and though maybe it doesn't have the finesse of a megane, it's devastatingly quick The M135i was also very quick but it was also very boring. You are right though Roystinho I am unfairly judging a car that I have never even been in let alone driven. I think the problem is I am smarting at the cost of the thing, is it really worth 12K more than a 275 trophy, I think not At least it cant be as bad as the BMW.......................................... I hope I've heard nothing but good reports about the Merc I'm sure you have a good car there (well the GF anyway).. Most of the hot hatch reports I have read either have the Golf R as top dog or the 265. Still not convinced on the A45 Jackal but we shall see. Just confirmed the order and we take delivery in early November. The GF is doing cartwheels so I might fill my boots while I have the chance if you know what I mean

A bit harsh to say the M135i is a bad car. Or in other words, it isn't a bad car. It just sounds like it didn't meet your expectations.
I was tempted by the A45. Like you, I couldn't get over the price of the thing. If I am spending that sort of money, the car has to be a keeper or a really special car.

That's the appeal, for me at least. Would be even better without the quad pipes Agree, that's why it appeals to me too - it's why my car was ordered debadged from the factory Put a 114d badge on the back :P I am aware of someone who has. Well the M135i will have no issue pulling that 'look' of.

Can understand de-badging a car but to stick a lower badge on your car...I don't get it.

Only about 2 secs to a tonne, I reckon there is the same same gap between the 265 to the M135i as there is from the M135i to the A45. However remember speed alone does not a great car make.

Even the M135iX trails the A45 quite substantially on a drag and round the twisties the BMW has no chance. The 265/275 on the other hand imo would bury both.

The GF has had me looking at every review under the sun in the past 48 hours and the closest the M135i gets in any test is 0.9 sec to a tonne, some have it over 2 secs behind. The A45 is by far the quicker car but as I said speed is not the b all and end all.

I've seen them too, some have them as near as damn it level pegging, others don't I.e the start makes a huge difference. After a tonne is where there is a real difference, the a45 runs out of puff and the difference in displacement comes into play, by 150mph there is a 4 second difference. Anyway, both great cars, over twisting road the a45 would leave the Beamer for dead, unless it blew its turbo......

There are a number of videos on YouTube which show after 100 it comparatively runs out of puff . This is just one I found quickly:
