IIRC - built in the same factory as the Avantime

i remember these, actually, my mum and dad had a caravan in norfolk and at the Haven site a guy who worked in entertainment used to be a spitting image of Cliff Richard and he'd do shows and stuff, he used to have one of these things and I remeber thinking, what is that!

i reckon it was cool as ****..... in a weird coupe / mpv way that'll never sell no matter how many mind-altering drugs you take.

If i had the money I would have had one... probably the most unusual vehicle with a mainstream car manufacturer's badge on it on the road today.

Shame it didnt take off but it will be a future classic..

The Avantime is already recognised as a classic by Renault Heritage. You get 8 points for attending a Renault Heritage event in an Avantime. Same as an Alpine so guess which one I took to Magny Cours! More reliable and aircon...

The Vel Satis has higher build quality and drives better, but it's not a future classic. It was built in too high numbers and isn't 'different' enough.

Friend of mine recently bought a mint fully loaded 3.5 V6 Vel Satis from ebay for £3K dead. A lot of car for the money and prices will only go down!

I still have a small yellow Matchbox model one. You can see it in this pic: http://www.rapidpants.com/junk/Toys/Toys12.jpg

It was one of my fave cars as a kid.

And no, I wasn't playing with my toys, I was emptying my parents loft of all my junk and moving it into mine!!

Zero I'm afraid.

By the way my Avantime was recently photographed for Stephen Bayley's new car book.
Intended to be the definitive car design guide.

The Avantime was in good company. Nick Masons GTO will also feature. No other Renault's I'm afraid except possibly the RUK R4.

Yes and they polished it for me too!

A recent article in Classic Car Weekly seems to indicate that a white Renault 5 (Le Car shape) will also feature in the book. The studio looks the same as where mine was shot and there is a Nick Mason Ferrari in the foreground.

There's one I see in west London fairly regularly. Still looks amazing, especially the rear lights. Doesn't look as though it was unveiled 12 years ago
