2016 Renault UK Clio Cup race dates out as top touring car team Ciceley now joins grid!

The Renault UK Clio Cup will again race fully alongside the Dunlop British Touring Car Championship in 2016 with leading BTCC team Ciceley Motorsport having now confirmed its own exciting plans to join the grid.

Just like this year, 2015’s Clio Cup season will consist of 18 races – two each at nine of the BTCC’s events. Yet again that means huge trackside crowds and live coverage on the ITV4 channel.

The season will begin and end with traditional fixtures on the Brands Hatch Indy and Grand Prix circuits although there is a change mid-way through the campaign as Snetterton in Norfolk makes a return (see dates below).

Meanwhile Ciceley Motorsport, one of the BTCC’s top teams, will expand operations to also run cars in the Clio Cup. Its involvement further strengthens the Clio Cup’s already prominent links to the BTCC and marks something of a return to the Renaultsport fold for Ciceley team boss Russell Morgan who previously raced in Renault UK’s Spider sportscar championship in 1996 – the year in which current BTCC legend Jason Plato became Champion.

Morgan commented: “I don’t remember racing him too much – he was normally well off into the distance! Certainly I’d expect the drivers we sign to our UK Clio Cup team to be somewhat more competitive…

“We are very excited to be joining the UK Clio Cup grid for 2016. Renaultsport have done a fantastic job with the Clio Cup these past 12 months and more and more the touring car teams are becoming involved whether on the technical, sponsorship or mentoring side.

“We’ve looked at branching out for a few years but we believe that now is absolutely the right time to do it and that we can bring on some really promising talent for the future. We’re here to win, of course, but there is no way we expect to simply walk in and do that – the standard of the teams is exceptionally high and it is going to be a very interesting technical, sporting and commercial challenge for us.”
