460bhp ZOE e-concept inspired by Renault Sport’s electric technologies

Yes, it is real… albeit only as a concept. But boy did the electric powered Renault ZOE e-sport – with the equivalent of nearly 460bhp on tap! – turn heads when it was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

The two-seater – four-wheel-drive and with all-carbon fibre bodywork – is powered by twin electric motors producing a neck-straining 340kW and 640Nm.

It will accelerate from 0-62mph in just 3.2 seconds with 130mph reached in under ten seconds. In just a few tenths of a second its motors reach 4300rpm and acceleration is linear, uninterrupted by gear changes…

The futuristic car further underlines Renault’s commitment to the on-going development of electric vehicles – a market in which it is the world leader.

Indeed much of its development has been inspired by technologies developed by engineers at Renault Sport Racing and the Renault e.dams which is currently dominating the FIA Formula E Championship – the world’s premier electric racing category.

Astonishingly its power output is vastly greater than that used Formula E (equivalent to 270bhp).

In addition the ZOE’s cockpit includes two Recaro bucket seats with racing harnesses and Formula E style controls such as a rectangular steering wheel!

Just like the Renault e.dams FE car, an air and water cooling system with front-mounted radiator is used to make sure that the battery and control systems operate at the ideal temperature.

In fact the ZOE is race-inspired throughout meaning, like the punch delivered by its electric motors, the handling is knock-out too. Notably :

  • A tubular steel chassis (built by TORK Engineering) based on those used by Renault Sport cars competing in bill climbs and ice racing
  • Lowered ride height, wider track, double-wishbone suspension
  • 20-inch wheels and competition-style braking power
  • Öhlins four-way adjustable dampers, similar to those selected for the Renault Mégane R.S. 275 Trophy-R

Renault’s Concept Car Design Director Stéphane Janin commented: “The brief for the Renault ZOE e-sport concept couldn’t have been simpler: ‘Have fun!’. So we came up with something midway between a production model and a racing car… It’s perfect for lovers of extreme driving sensations!

Éric Feunteun, Director, Electric Vehicle Programme added:At Renault, we believe that electric cars are capable of addressing the needs of all types of customers, with the emphasis on driving enjoyment… The Renault ZOE e-sport concept is a stunning expression of this!”
