Me & My Car(s) No.11

Twingo R.S. Gordini 133 or Clio R.S. 172 track day car? Owner of both Laura Green just can’t decide!

It’s probably to say that each has become something of an obsession for Laura who, by day, is an apprentice aircraft fitter for Airbus.

The 172, in Mondial Blue, had already had a competitive life before Laura bought it in summer 2016. “It had been used for hill sprint events. It has a five-speed H-shift ‘box which means it’s either converted from a road car or the rally-spec version used back then.

“My father and I have fitted two seats and just go out and have some fantastic fun in it – we’re from Wrexham and the courses we go to most are Angelsey, Curborough, Llandow, Castle Combe or the Mid-Wales Activity Centre.

“You can feel a bit nervous before you go out but then you always find yourself trying to overtake lots of other cars! Its capability around the corners surprises a lot of people.

“We’ve also had it mapped and uprated the pads and tyres to ‘semi-slicks’. I’ve got more plans for it – I just need to stop spending on the Twingo.”

Ah, the Twingo…

“I bought it in 2015. I had a 1.2 Clio which kept giving me trouble and I said I’d never buy a French car again! Then of course I saw the Twingo in the local dealership – a 53-plate Mk2 in Malta Blue – and immediately fell in love with it. After a bit of research the next thing I knew I’d bought it for £6500 with 15,000 miles on the clock.”

Could this be the most pampered Twingo in history? Powder-coated inlet manifold in ‘Candy Blue’; Bilstein coil-over suspension; custom half-cage; Sabelt Renault Sport steering wheel; Corbeau RS1 Sportline reclining bucket seats, Sabelt 4-point harness; Fusion sub-woofer; Pioneer short stereo; Diamond Motorsport cup holder; rear diffuser; rear spoiler, smoother front bumper; wrapped fog lights…

The list goes on and Laura has made sure she’s enjoyed every penny spent – the mileage now stands at 48,000!

“I’ve spent about £6000 on it so far. I love how nimble it is and that it’s different looking – not like some Fiesta or Corsa. Loads of people are intrigued by it.”

Indeed it’s become a stand-out addition to R.S. owners’ line-ups at events such as the Rico Arena’s Waxstock, Donington Park’s French Car Show and TRAX at Silverstone.

Wild horses would not drag Laura away from the Twingo. But a 5 GT Turbo 2 might…

“I just really like the look of Renaults and the R.S. versions – yes, particularly the Twingos with the wider arch kit! But also the Mégane 275 and phase 1 Clios.

“But if money was no object? The 5 GT Turbo 2. They are just stunning. A real head turner. People really look at them…”
