Clio Cup UK will replace Renault UK’s Clio Cup which, after 20 seasons, drew to a close at Brands Hatch earlier this month (see separate story).

The iconic full length Grand Prix circuit configurations at Silverstone, Brands Hatch and Donington Park are all on the calendar as are two more events to be held overseas – one already confirmed for Magny Cours in France.

While the Renault UK championship has appeared at British Touring Car events since 2000, Clio Cup UK will take a different direction and join the successful British GT package.

The new fifth generation car is powered by a 1.3 TCe (turbocharged), 16 valve, four-cylinder engine producing 180hp. Torque is put at 320Nm and the car’s weight at 1040kgs.

Renault Sport Racing will provide support for Clio Cup UK from its headquarters in Viry Chatillon, France.

R.Sport Promotions Ltd will be the promoter for Clio Cup UK and R.Sport will continue as Renault Sport’s official UK importer (competition cars and parts).

Renault Sport Racing’s Customer Racing Commercial Director Benoit Nogier commented: “2020 will mark an important new chapter for the spirit of Clio Cup competition.

“Our philosophy has always been to make competing in Clio Cup accessible and enjoyable for both amateur racing enthusiasts as well as career-minded drivers, and we believe New Clio Cup is the perfect car to achieve that.

“It’s an honour for the Clio Cup UK to join the best GT championship in the UK and all the manufacturers’ series held during the same weekends.

“The British GT meetings will be the perfect host for the Clio Cup UK and will give the opportunity to our drivers to progress in higher GT categories. The high quality organisation of these weekends will also offer our Clio Cup UK teams and drivers the optimal environment and great video production with live streaming.”

Meanwhile championships for the fifth generation car will be held in France and Spain as well. The French championship will join the UK teams and drivers at Brands Hatch in August.

In addition, Renault Sport Racing has deliberately designed the car so it can be used for competition in rallycross and rallying with the fitting of specialised kits.
