The Renaultsport Trophy – a race championship for a single Renaultsport model – dates back more than 30 years.
In more recent times it has become a permanent part of the spectacular pan-European World Series by Renault tour of events. R.S 0.1, which appeared for the first time publicly in the UK at January’s Autosport International show, is the most outrageous model yet to star.
A dozen of the technically-advanced machines lined up on the grid at Spa with races for 26 ‘prestige’ and ‘elite’ (pro) drivers.
Holland’s Steijn Schothorst, driving for long-time Renaultsport participant Equipe Verschuur, took the elite sprint race win, while Italians David Fumanelli and Dario Capitanio (Oregon) won the two-driver endurance event ahead of Britain’s Lucian Bacheta and Italy’s Niccolo Nalio (also driving for Oregon).
Holland’s Diederik Sijthoff (V8 Racing) won the Elite sprint race but third was taken by Belgium’s Sarah Bovy (Monlau Competicion) – she becomes the first female racer ever to finish on the podium in a race at a World Series by Renault event.
The Renaultsport Trophy will race with World Series by Renault when it comes to the UK later this year – Sat 5/Sun 6 September at the British F1 GP venue of Silverstone.
