Anton Spires returns for Brands Hatch season opener with Westbourne Motorsport

Anton Spires will make it a four-car line-up for Westbourne Motorsport at Brands Hatch this weekend after securing a late deal to contest the Renault UK Clio Cup’s opening rounds of 2019 at the Kent circuit.

Spires was a front-running name when he contested 14 of the 2016 Clio Cup season’s 18 rounds – he achieved five top ten finishes and had a best result of fifth (at Thruxton). He then went on to finish runner-up in 2017’s BARC Michelin Clio Series with Westbourne.

The Buckingham driver, backed by One Zero Accountancy and One Zero Contractors, said: “It’s great knowing I’ll be back racing in the Clio Cup this weekend and I certainly feel I have some unfinished business to take care of after I wasn’t able to see out the full season in 2016.

“Of course I’d love to be back for the whole season but let’s see how things go this weekend and take it from there.”

He added: “We at least managed to get in a couple of tests with Westbourne recently – one of them on the Brands Indy circuit that we’re racing on this weekend – so I feel I’m up to speed with things.

“I’ve obviously built a strong rapport with the Westbourne people and everyone saw in 2018 just how good a team they are with their results so I know I’m in a good place.”

At 26, Spires will be the oldest driver in Westbourne’s line-up this weekend – team-mates Ben Colburn and Aaron Thompson are both 19 and newcomer Finlay Robinson just 17.

Joint Team Principal James Colburn said: “We are delighted to have Anton join the team for the first rounds this weekend.

“Having run Anton in the Michelin Clio Series as well as working with him when he competed in the Clio Cup previously, we know he has the pace to be at the sharp end of the grid and will certainly be a great team-mate for our younger drivers to learn from.”

This weekend's action at Brands Hatch will start on Friday with two officially timed test sessions. Timed qualifying to decide the starting grids for the weekend's two races takes place on Saturday morning (11:25-11:55).

On Saturday afternoon (16:25) comes the first of those two races – round one of the 2019 season. Round two is on Sunday at 13:20 and will be broadcast live on ITV4/ITV4HD and also live-streamed to mobile devices (all part of ITV Sport's comprehensive coverage of the British Touring Car Championship's events).
