Bond takes first Clio Cup pole for Oulton Race 1 but Young in P1 for Race 2

Jamie Bond backed up his Friday form with a brilliant maiden pole position for Oulton Park’s first race on Saturday ahead of championship leaders Jack Young and Max Coates. Young, though, took pole for race two on Sunday…

The fight for pole during the half hour qualifying session – the most exciting so far this season – was always between MRM’s Young and Team HARD pair Bond and Coates.

Each took turns at the top of the timing screens but, in the end, it was Bond, with a best lap of one minute, 35.005s who secured first place on the starting grid for this afternoon’s race which gets under way at 17:10.

Bond was a mere 0.012s faster than Young who took second. Coates, in third, was just a further 0.054s adrift meaning only 0.066s covered the top three.

However, pole for race two – based on each driver’s second fastest qualifying times – went the way of Young ahead of Coates and Bond. Again it was incredibly close between these three with just 0.082s separating them this time…

Bond, who is in only his third Clio Cup event, commented: “This shows my form in Friday testing was no fluke – we are genuinely on the pace and I’m delighted.

“Jack and Max are no mugs, though, but I also know they are very clean racers – I’m looking forward to our head-to-head later…”

Young, who leads the standings by 12 points from Coates, said: “Congratulations to Jamie – that first pole is always a nice feeling.

“I think it’s going to be very close between all three of us this afternoon and overtaking here can be difficult. Of course I want to win and pole tomorrow helps my chance of that but the main thing this weekend is to finish ahead of Max…”

Behind there was an equally fierce fight to be fourth fastest. Ultimately this went the way of Westbourne Motorsport’s Ben Colburn ahead of Team HARD pair Ethan Hammerton and Jade Edwards in sixth and seventh and then MRM’s Brett Lidsey in eighth. They also all qualified in the same positions for race two.

Colburn was in fact just 0.177s off Bond’s pole in qualifying for race one’s grid. For race two, just 0.256s separated him in fourth to Lidsey in eighth…

Meanwhile Specialized Motorsport’s Luke Warr and Westbourne’s Finlay Robinson – his session hampered by a gearbox problem – qualified eighth and ninth fastest for both races…
