Renault Sport Racing has confirmed an all-new Clio Cup championship in the UK for 2020 and will strategically position it alongside SRO’s British GT Championship, the ideal racing platform to appeal to both career and amateur drivers.
Clio Cup UK will feature the new turbocharged 1.3-litre 180hp ‘Gen 5’ Clio Cup race car – launched in June during the French Formula One Grand Prix and presented for the first time to teams this weekend in Magny Cours, France.
A provisional calendar of seven events has been released, five of which will take place on the successful British GT race weekends. These will include the iconic full-length Silverstone, Brands Hatch and Donington Park Grand Prix circuits – with Clio Cup France joining the grid at Brands Hatch.
Two overseas events will also take place on FIA Grade A International circuits with one already confirmed at Magny Cours, France.
Two races will be held at each fixture making for a 14-race calendar in total.
Renault Sport Racing Customer Racing Commercial Director Benoit Nogier commented: “2020 will mark an important new chapter for the spirit of Clio Cup competition.
“Our philosophy has always been to make competing in Clio Cup accessible and enjoyable for both amateur racing enthusiasts as well as career-minded drivers, and we believe New Clio Cup is the perfect car to achieve that.
“It’s an honour for the Clio Cup UK to join the best GT championship in the UK and all the manufacturers’ series held during the same weekends.
“The British GT meetings will be the perfect host for the Clio Cup UK and will give the opportunity to our drivers to progress in higher GT categories. The high quality organisation of these weekends will also offer our Clio Cup UK teams and drivers the optimal environment and great video production with live-streaming.”
Lauren Granville, British GT Championship Manager said: “It’s testament to the British GT Championship’s status that a global manufacturer and such a respected national category will join our official support series roster in 2020.
“We are sure Clio Cup UK will provide exciting wheel-to-wheel racing which, by joining the British GT support package, will also benefit from free live-streaming.”
R.S. Promotions Ltd will be Clio Cup UK’s official promoter. R.Sport will continue as official UK importer of Renault Sport cars and parts. Renault Sport Racing will provide support from its central headquarters in Viry Chatillon, France.
