Coates beats Young for win number seven in red-flagged Knockhill Race 1

Max Coates has won today’s Renault UK Clio Cup race at Knockhill to slightly extend his lead in the championship over Jack Young who finished second with a new lap record.

Coates led every lap from pole position as Young fought his way through from sixth on the grid.

Lap three proved decisive in Young’s charge as he pounced at Duffus Dip to overtake both his MRM team-mate Brett Lidsey and Ethan Hammerton to move into third.

By the end of the lap he was into second as Jamie Bond – who’d held the position behind leader Coates – fell back with a turbo boost problem with his car.

At the same time the Mégane R.S. safety car was deployed as marshals retrieved Ben Colburn’s Westbourne Motorsport machine from the gravel trap at Leslie’s. Colburn had spun into the gravel while avoiding Hammerton who’d had a wild moment in his three-into-one incident with Young and Lidsey (pictured).

At the re-start, Young looked to challenge Coates for the lead but then made an error at the chicane. Setting a new lap record, he was able to recover much of the lost ground and was within half a second of Coates when the race was red-flagged after Tyler Lidsey’s MRM car became stricken at the hairpin.

It meant Coates had taken his seventh win of the season, although his lead over Young at the top of the table has only increased by a further two points from six to eight.

Coates commented: “That’s just the result we wanted and even with Jack right behind at one stage with the headlights on I felt comfortable about defending my lead. Then he made his error and that was enough for me…”

Young said: “It’s a shame I had that small moment at the chicane and another shame the race was red flagged as I was trying to get into a position to make a move on Max at the end. We’ve got another chance tomorrow when we start from pole.”

Behind, Lidsey was third ahead of Bond – closing in fast in fourth after his car’s turbo problem cleared itself.

The recovering Hammerton was fifth and Specialized Motorsport’s Luke Warr took fifth and sixth

Westbourne’s Finlay Robinson, who had run as high as fourth early on, crossed the line in seventh but was later disqualified for his part in an incident with Tyler Lidsey.
