Young started from pole position and held the lead into the first corner, Old Hall, with Coates challenging him on the outside line.
This put Young on a tighter line than normal and at the exit his MRM car spun right and crashed heavily into the barriers. Young was seen hobbling as he vacated his broken car but later reported he’d just banged his knee on the steering column.
The incident left Coates in front under pressure from his Team HARD team-mate Bond and Westbourne Motorsport’s Colburn.
These three would circulate nose to tail for the whole race but none were able to make a move so finished in this order. Each also took a turn to hold the race’s fastest lap which in the end went the way of Colburn for two bonus points.
Coates’ win, his fifth of the season, gives him a six-point lead over Young at the top of the table.
He commented: “We’d had a plan to get past Jack early on but when he went off the road just opened up in front of me.
“I was always comfortable in front but I had to push very hard to make sure Jamie didn’t get within striking distance. The main thing is Jack is OK.”
Bond’s second place equalled his career-best result achieved in Saturday’s race. He reported: “There was a slight niggle with my car’s power exiting corners and that cost any late shot of the win but I’m still very happy with how my weekend has gone.”
Colburn’s third place was his second podium result of the season and added to a top-three finish in last weekend’s Clio Cup Open international event at the French Formula 1 Grand Prix.
He enthused: “Fourth yesterday, third today and with the fastest lap and pushing the top two all the way – this has been my strongest weekend so far. I just wish we didn’t have such a long break now until the next event.”
Fourth position in today’s race went to MRM’s Brett Lidsey and fifth and sixth to Team HARD pair Jade Edwards and Ethan Hammerton. However this was only after Hammerton had suffered a spin while lying fourth following a tangle with Lidsey at Old Hall.
Westbourne’s Finlay Robinson and Specialized Motorsport’s Luke Warr both retired in a collision at the Fogarty Esses to end what had until that point been a fine battle between them.
