On fastest lap times which determine race one’s grid order, Dorlin was almost a quarter of a second clear of anyone else in this morning’s qualifying session with a best lap of one minute, 33.600 seconds.
On second best times which decide race two’s starting positions, Westbourne Motorsport driver Dorlin was 0.204s up on the rest.
On the grid for race one – round seven of the 2018 season being held at 16:00 today – he will be joined on the front row by one of his main title rivals, WDE Motorsport’s triple champion Paul Rivett.
Third and fourth will be WDE’s Dan Zelos and Team Pyro’s Max Coates. Westbourne’s James Colburn and WDE’s Lee Pattison will line up fifth and sixth.
Race two – round eight of the 18-round season – takes place at 13:30 tomorrow and will receive live coverage on ITV4. Alongside Dorlin on the front row for that one will be Coates – currently second in the points table to Dorlin – while completing the top six are Rivett, Zelos, Colburn and Team Pyro’s Bradley Burns. Notably the gap from second fastest Coates to Colburn in fifth was a mere 16 1000ths of a second...
Dorlin commented: “I like the way that session’s gone, obviously! The key will be getting it off the line and maintaining first place through the first corner – it’s difficult to pass around here so if we can get away well and hold the lead then I believe we’ve got good pace for the races.”
Rivett, third in the standings just eight points adrift of Dorlin, said: “Second and third on the two grids isn't too shabby and, as you know, I always race better than I qualify. What’s also encouraging is that WDE have three cars right up there which is important for us against Pyro in the Entrants Trophy.”
Coates’s fourth and second place qualifying performances came courtesy of a late dash after a set-up change to his car mid-way through the session took longer than anticipated.
“It was really only left with time for one lap at the end of the session so I had to make it stick,” he explained. “Luckily I improved which helped both my race one grid position and made what had been my best time up until that point my second best time which got me on the front row for race two. It’s important we keep the heat on Dorlin.”
Meanwhile the session proved frustrating for Pyro pair Daniel Rowbottom and Jack McCarthy who are currently equal fourth in the championship. McCarthy, who had lap times disallowed for exceeding track limits, will line up ninth on both grids with Rowbottom twice starting from 11th after a mechanical glitch with his car during qualifying.
