MRM’s Lidsey topped the earlier morning session held in damp but drying conditions with a lap in one minute 06.335 seconds around the Northamptonshire venue’s short National circuit configuration and this would stand as the best time of the day.
Second and third were Spires – returning to the championship with Westbourne Motorsport – and Jade Edwards in her first outing with new team Assetto Motorsport.
This afternoon’s second session, held on a wet track, was generally slower and it was Team HARD driver Bond’s name that emerged on top – although he was just 0.030s quicker than Specialized Motorsport’s Luke Warr, a shock second fastest.
Nathan Edwards, also returning to the championship with MRM, was third and only 0.069s away from Bond’s time.
On combined times from the two sessions, however, it was Lidsey who was fastest outright ahead of Spires, Jade Edwards, Bond, Nathan Edwards and Warr.
Lidsey and Bond go into Silverstone this weekend lying fourth and third in the standings.
But each will have been buoyed by their performances today, particularly as the two drivers they are chasing at the top of the table – Team HARD’s Max Coates and MRM’s Jack Young – ended up only seventh and ninth fastest on the combined timesheets.
In the title battle, Coates leads Young by just four points with a maximum of 56 available from Silverstone’s two races – the penultimate rounds of the season. Bond in third is 40 adrift of leader Coates and Lidsey in fourth is 53 behind. Both need to be within 55 leaving Silverstone if they are to keep their title hopes alive in the season finale at Brands Hatch next month.
The Clio Cup drivers will twice be on track at Silverstone tomorrow – first for their timed qualifying session from 11:25-11:55 and, later, for their opening race of the weekend at 16:30.
Their second race, at 12:40 on Sunday, will be broadcast LIVE on the ITV4 television channel and also livestreamed by ITV.
