Masters Cup class leader Lee Pattison (Scholes) topped the times during official Courier Connections Renault UK Clio Cup testing at Oulton Park International Circuit today, Friday, 6th June, with multiple category champion Paul Rivett (Banstead) less than a tenth of a second adrift.
Pattison’s best of 1m52.757 seconds (85.94mph) for Team Pyro came during the second of two sessions at the Cheshire track – a period which was shortened following an excursion for James Colburn (Worthing) under braking at Shell Oils Hairpin early in the run. Thankfully, the Thruxton race winner emerged unscathed and his Renault Clio only sustained largely cosmetic front-end damage.
“It hasn’t been too bad at all today”, said Pattison, “I think we could have been quicker, I nearly went off twice on my first lap on new tyres so that made me a bit too cautious on the next couple and so I wasted the best of the tyres.
“Due to the stoppage with James [Colburn] in the second session, there were a load of things I wanted to try but didn’t have time to. Today could all be irrelevant, though, as tomorrow it’s supposed to be tipping it down. Sunday’s forecast is better, should be like today – warm and a bit cloudy – so fingers crossed.”
Rivett hit the ground running for WDE Motorsport during this morning’s first 45-minute session, heading the times at that point with a lap of 1m52.837 seconds (85.88mph) to deliver his best showing yet in 2014 during an official pre-event test day – second quickest on combined times.
Outright championship leader Josh Cook (Bath) ended the day third fastest overall for SV Racing with KX, thanks to a best lap of 1m52.914 seconds (85.82mph) during the morning session, with Pyro’s Mike Bushell (Tunbridge Wells) rounding out the top four. So evenly matched were the lead quartet, only 0.162 seconds separated them.
Fifth on the combined times went to Westbourne Motorsport’s Devon Modell (Maidstone), a very strong showing from the Autumn Cup race winner putting him 0.3 seconds clear of 20Ten Racing’s Jordan Stilp (Potterspury) who impressed with his top six placing.
Championship newcomer Charlie Ladell (Felixstowe), meanwhile, ended the day a highly competitive eighth quickest overall, less than 0.8 seconds shy of WDE team-mate Rivett and just 0.012 seconds behind seventh placed SV Racing with KX driver Ant Whorton-Eales (Lichfield).
