The Midlands based squad is hopeful of running as many as four cars next season and has longer term ambitions of competing in the BTCC which the UK Clio Cup races alongside live on ITV4.

Wilmot raced in the BTCC in 2015 and has this year contested several Ginetta sportscar races. Alden has enjoyed success in the Time Attack and club racing categories and is behind the new Matrix squad.

He commented: “Setting up this team is something we’ve been working on for a number of years, so it’s great to finally see our plans become a reality.

“We intend to start by establishing ourselves at BTCC events by competing in the UK Clio Cup before moving into other areas of motor sport. Our long term plan is to compete in the BTCC so there are some exciting times ahead!”

He urged drivers interested in becoming part of Matrix’s UK Clio Cup plans to email Team Manager David Hayes at david@matrixmotorsport.co.uk

Matrix Motorsport is planning an official launch in the next few weeks when details of sponsors and partners will be revealed along with the cars’ final livery.

Will Fewkes, Renault Sport’s UK Motorsport Championship Manager, said: “We are delighted to be able to announce a new team for 2018 even before our 2017 season if over – we very much welcome Matrix Motorsport to the UK Clio Cup grid next year and look forward to hearing more about their plans in due course.”
