Phil this week took delivery of his own Renault Retail Group-branded Mégane R.S. from RRG’s Enfield dealership (one of four it owns in the UK).
He will now drive the car – in Volcanic Orange – to and from each Clio Cup race event where it will join the line-up of R.S. models on display outside the championship’s Race Centre.
And enthused Phil: “I knew the new Mégane R.S. would be good, but not this good!
“Genuinely, I am astonished at how well it turns on the throttle with the four-wheel-steering (4CONTROL) system that Renault Sport has developed. Power delivery is also excellent. I don’t say this lightly, but it’s even better than the previous Mégane R.S. which everyone fell in love with…
“There are actually lots of USPs, including various party modes to play with which are each easy to use for the driver on the R.S. Monitor screen – really well thought out. It’s very Renault Sport – racy, lovely to drive and it puts a huge grin on your face. It also sounds mega inside and out!”
Phil added: “I feel very lucky to be driving this car to race weekends – the Renault Sport brand, whether it’s the Clio Cup championship or the road cars on display, always turns heads and has a huge following. Next stop for the Clio Cup is Snetterton this weekend (28/29 July)… I wonder if I ask nicely if someone will give me five minutes on track!”
The Mégane R.S. range has received rave reviews from media and motoring enthusiasts alike since its introduction to the UK market some 15 years ago. However this latest version – the fourth generation Mégane R.S. – is the most sophisticated yet.
Renault Sport Formula One Team’s engineers have had a say on its engine design and power delivery and driver Nico Hülkenberg has also helped oversee development.
Two versions of the new Mégane R.S. – Sport and Cup chassis – went on sale in the UK in spring of this year, starting at £27,495. Both versions are available with the option of either six-speed manual or EDC automatic transmissions.
Renault Sport has also just confirmed it is to produce a Trophy version of the car.
Richard White, R.S. specialist at Renault Enfield, commented: “The fourth generation Mégane R.S. really is now the halo product for Renault Sport’s road cars and we are delighted to hand over the key to one to Phil for the remainder of the Clio Cup season.
“With four events still to go on the calendar between now and the end of September – at Snetterton, Rockingham, Silverstone and Brands Hatch – and up to 40,000 people per event we are sure the car is going to draw a lot of attention in the paddock.”
