On the Sunday Rivett not only set a new lap record in the first of two races but then lowered his own new benchmark even further in the second encounter (his new time of one minute 04.726 seconds comparing to the previous best of 1m05.114s).
Rivett had also been fastest in Friday’s official testing at Silverstone with an even better lap in 1m04.358s. Incredibly all of Rivett’s laps at Silverstone were achieved with the exact same car-engine combination with which he and his WDE Motorsport team started the 2014 Renault UK Clio Cup season. Nearly two seasons later and after all those miles neither engine nor car has had need of a rebuild…
The Clio Cup’s qualifying record around Silverstone’s National circuit tumbled too, with Ant Whorton-Eales recording a lap in 1m04.286s to give the Maximum Motorsport team its first pole position since joining the championship at Knockhill. AWE’s time was a staggering 0.794s under the previous record – consider the relative shortness of the lap at Silverstone and his effort becomes even more mind-boggling.
The man he pipped in qualifying was Team BMR Restart with Pyro’s Ashley Sutton. Both would go on to take their fourth wins of the season on the Sunday with a victory apiece.
Cue another record… Race one at Silverstone ended with the UK Clio Cup’s closest top-three finish in history as a mere 0.319s covered winner Sutton, second-placed Rivett and Whorton-Eales in third as they flashed across the line. This breaks the record set earlier in the year at Oulton Park (0.357s) which itself had broken the previous tightest finish of 0.508s – on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit back in April!
Meanwhile out of 244 laps and just over 445 miles now raced in 2015, Sutton has led 76 and 132.7 respectively compared to the 70 and 132.1 of Whorton-Eales. It’s ridiculously close between them, but both still trail the even more impressive 86 and 153.7 of championship leader Ash Hand.
Silverstone also saw a number of drivers (six of them new to the championship) establish or achieve personal best results in the UK Clio Cup. In race two Dan Holland took his maiden podium result with a third while and Josh Price fifth in only his fourth Clio Cup start to back up a strong first appearance at Rockingham two weeks earlier.
Alex Sedgwick and Tom Witts were the highest-placed of the debutants in qualifying and race respectively. Sedgwick, not 17 until February and the youngest driver on the grid, was a superb fifth in qualifying; Witts, running with the Maximum team, finished in that place in race one just ahead of Ben Davis, sixth on his debut with the Italian Rangoni Corse squad on its first UK Clio Cup outing. The two races also produced best results of eighth for Michele Puccetti/Rangoni, 11th for Tom Butler/20Ten Racing, 12th for Sedgwick and 13th for Sam Watkins/20Ten.
JamSport Racing’s Tom Grundy also improved on his best qualifying position so far as he lined up in fifth for the start of race two…
Finally at Silverstone, WDE achieved its best score to date in a race in the Entrants Trophy – the combined total of its two highest-placed drivers – with a 47 which has moved it past Cooksport for second place in the division. The Entrants Trophy title (its sixth in seven years) is, though, already Team Pyro’s with Sutton and Mark Howard also sewing up the Graduates Cup and Masters Cup classes at Silverstone.
