Spires, Rowbottom tip new PP Motorsport, Eco-Motive teams to shine on Renault UK Clio Cup debuts

Anton Spires and Daniel Rowbottom both believe their single-car squads, Team Eco-Motive and PP Motorsport respectively, can challenge for the top positions first time out in this year’s Renault UK Clio Cup.

Both teams have been busy along with rival outfits during a series of tests at circuits around the UK and have more running planned before they make their debuts in the UK Clio Cup when the championship’s new season gets under way at Brands Hatch, Kent on Sat 2/Sun 3 April.

PP is receiving technical support from one of the UK Clio Cup’s former top names, Westbourne Motorsport, and driver Spires is clearly seeing the benefits.

After tests at Brands Hatch and Donington Park, the Buckingham racer: “Both have gone really well and we are getting on top of the car. Working with Westbourne and using their knowledge is really bringing everyone in the team forward and we are now looking for strong results right from the first round – I think we can fight among the top six.”

PP Team Principal John Creasey added: “We are very impressed with the UK Clio Cup race car and it suits Anton's driving style – our main focus is on the first two rounds at Brands Hatch so we hopefully get our first season off to the best possible start. We’re confident we can make a very positive first impression there for the PP Motorsport name as well as our sponsors.”

Rowbottom predicts even greater things and believes a top-three result at Brands Hatch is realistic.

He commented: “We are heading into a busy month in March with lots of testing booked so it's now time to push to reach the target lap times. I certainly won't be happy unless we finish our testing programme capable of a podium at Brands Hatch and at the moment I am confident that it is a reality... However I’m experienced enough to also take what others appear to be doing in pre-season testing with a pinch of salt!

“At Thruxton we just concentrated on discovering how the car reacts to various set-up changes. It is apparent there are some tricks with this car and we’re still learning all of them but considering it’s really just my father, Kevin, and I doing the engineering then I’m very happy with where we are…
