Teams Champion SVR re-signs Whorton-Eales for 2015 Clio Cup

SV Racing, Teams Champion in 2014’s Renault UK Clio Cup, has re-signed rising star Ant Whorton-Eales (Lichfield) to spearhead its 2015 title assault and Team Principal Daniel Buxton says he is relieved to have kept the 20-year-old on board.

The Clio Cup, for racing versions of Renault’s potent Clio Renaultsport 200 Turbo EDC, will once more star at Dunlop British Touring Car Championship events in 2015. The two opening rounds of its 18-round calendar will take place at the world-famous Brands Hatch circuit in Kent on the weekend of Sat 4th/Sun 5th April...

Cheshire’s Buxton, who won the Clio Cup crown himself as a driver in 2001, commented: “Ant is title material and I know that every team on the grid has been trying to lure him away during the winter break. We came very close to the drivers’ title with Josh Cook last year and managed to lift the Teams trophy – with Ant I believe we can do the double.

“He was one of the stand-out talents in 2014 – massive speed, leading races and finishing on the podium plenty but race wins just didn’t come his way. A bit like me in my first year in 2000!

“He’s told me fair and square that he has unfinished business with us. He wants to win and win properly, from the front. He really wants to stick it to rest.”

Whorton-Eales said: “This will actually be my fourth season in Clios but it was only last year that things really started to click for me with SVR. I suppose there is an expectation because of my experience and some people will probably label me the title favourite but I’m cool with that.

“I’m definitely experienced enough to know that in the Clio Cup it doesn’t come easily. I also expect some of the new names to be on the pace quickly and some of the drivers who it didn’t quite gel for in 2014 to have really got up to speed during the winter months.”

Whorton-Eales hopes in the future to emulate fellow Lichfielder Andrew Jordan who also raced in the Clio Cup before going on to become a BTCC Champion.

“There is actually a bit of a competition between us to see who can get the most coverage in our local media after each race weekend,” added Whorton-Eales. “Obviously Andrew is now one of the best touring car names in the world and it would be fantastic to achieve something similar to him.”
