Victory for Young in 'Thruxton thriller' after penalties for Lidsey & Coates

Jack Young has been declared the winner of this afternoon’s nail-biting Renault UK Clio Cup race at Thruxton after the two drivers who finished ahead of him, Brett Lidsey and Max Coates, both received time penalties.

Lidsey, Coates, Young and Jamie Bond used one another’s slipstreams to draw clear of the pack behind and become embroiled in one of the most exciting battles for the win in recent times.

On the final lap, Lidsey, who had started from a career-first pole position, was able to make a crucial break to take victory on the road. A time penalty for having made a false start, though, would relegate him to seventh in the final result…

Thus Coates, who crossed the line in second, should have inherited the win. But he also received a time penalty – for having gained an unfair advantage by ‘straight-lining’ the Club Chicane to pass Young during one of their many tussles.

On the final lap, Young, it should be pointed out, sportingly allowed Coates to re-pass him on the run to the line after he had committed the same offence.

This meant he took third on the road but, with Lidsey’s and Coates’ penalties applied, this became the victory…

Ultimately, Coates’ championship lead over Young has been reduced to just three points heading into tomorrow’s race – round 12 of the season.

Elsewhere a time penalty also meant a change to fourth and fifth positions in today’s race. Ethan Hammerton was fourth at the flag but he was also deemed to have straight-lined the chicane and not given the place back so was demoted to fifth behind Westbourne Motorsport’s Ben Colburn.

Just half a second behind, Team HARD’s Jade Edwards was sixth ahead of Lidsey who, on corrected times, took seventh by just one tenth of a second from Westbourne’s Finlay Robinson in eighth.

MRM’s Tyler Lidsey was ninth on his debut as Specialized Motorsport’s Luke Warr followed in tenth.
