Young led all the way from pole position while Coates, who won yesterday’s race, spent the opening laps defending from Brett Lidsey after a slow start.
Lidsey soon found a way past when Coates made a small error exiting the chicane – this also allowing Bond to close in.
These two started fighting over third and this allowed Lidsey to draw clear in second.
Having set the race’s fastest lap, Lidsey looked as if he would finish second to Young to make it a dream 1-2 result for their MRM team.
But it was not to be, Lidsey slipping wide off the track exiting McIntyres to allow Coates and Bond back past him.
Up front, Young reeled off the laps for his fifth win of the season while Coates managed to keep Bond at bay for second. Bond, in third, was able to set the race’s fastest lap in the closing stages for two valuable bonus points.
It all means, with four rounds to go – two each at Silverstone (28-29 Sept) and Brands Hatch (12-13 Oct) – that Coates leads Young at the top of the standings by the reduced margin of just four points. A total of 112 is up for grabs across those final four rounds…
Bond is third in the table, 40 points adrift of leader Coates. Lidsey in fourth is 53 adrift…
Winner Young commented: “It was nice to have a clear track in front and behind in that race but I still needed to put in the fast laps to make sure no-one got too close.
“The win puts the pressure back on Max and reminds him I’m not going away. I’m feeling confident about my chances at Silverstone.”
Coates said: “I made a bit of a poor start in that one and the off at the chicane maybe unsettled me for a lap or two but I was soon able to get back into my stride – unfortunately by then Jack was too far ahead.
“But second added to the win yesterday, and I’ve got experience of the pressures of the title race from two of the last three seasons. Hopefully that can count for something…”
Bond added: “It’s been a strong weekend in terms of pace but I actually feel we could have won both those races here and kept on closing up on Max and Jack. But we’re still in touch and, as we’ve seen many times this season, all sorts can happen when the pressure’s on. We’re still in this.”
