Young’s best time was a staggering one second under the existing qualifying lap record.
Young’s and several other drivers’ spectacular two-wheeled antics around Knockhill’s rollercoaster-like track lay-out can be viewed on the Clio Cup’s Twitter and Instagram accounts.
The 17-year-old MRM driver arrives at Knockhill lying second in the championship standings, six points behind leader Max Coates.
And it was Coates who set the second fastest time in today’s test, just ahead of his Team HARD team-mate Ethan Hammerton – on a high after his maiden win at Thruxton last time out.
Young, who tested a TCR Europe Renault Mégane R.S. mid-week at Hockenheim, Germany, said: “It’s my first time ever at Knockhill and it is an incredible circuit to drive – very exciting and you can’t relax for a second as there’s always the next corner coming up quickly.
“I’ve really enjoyed today but still don’t feel I’ve quite hooked up that perfect lap which is what will be needed for qualifying tomorrow.”
Young’s MRM team-mate Brett Lidsey was fourth fastest. Fifth, in his Team HARD car, was Jamie Bond – now up to third in the standings and within 32 points of leader Coates after a string of strong race results. Lidsey, fourth overall, also remains in realistic contention for the title with a maximum of 56 up for grabs in this weekend’s two races.
Sixth fastest in today’s test was Westbourne Motorsport’s Ben Colburn and a competitive seventh – just one second off Young’s pace – Specialized Motorsport’s Luke Warr. Westbourne’s Finlay Robinson and MRM’s Tyler Lidsey were also in touch in eighth and ninth.
The Clio Cup drivers will be on track tomorrow with qualifying (11:25-11:55) and then the first of their two races this weekend at 16:20. Race two is on Sunday at 14:55 and will be broadcast live on the ITV4 television channel and also live-streamed by ITV.com.
